Hummer H3 Alpha, 2008

Hummer H3 Alpha, 2008

The H3 Alpha is the second member of HUMMER's exclusive Alpha series, representing the pinnacle of performance, both off the road and on it. It comes with a new, 5.3L V-8 engine that delivers 295 horsepower (224 kW) and 317 lb.-ft. of torque (438 Nm). It is partnered with a four-speed automatic transmission and enables a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg) - an increase of more than 33 percent over other H3 models

Alpha - the ultimate HUMMER
HUMMER Alpha models represent the top in performance, capability and comfort. The H1 Alpha was the first of these ultimate HUMMERs, and like the H3 Alpha, it offered a more powerful engine as well as unique styling and comfort features.

The H3 is the newest model to carry the Alpha flag, and represents HUMMER's first Alpha model engineered in conjunction with GM Performance Division.

Award-winning interior and safety enhancements
The H3 Alpha shares the same widely admired interior as all H3 models, including detail revisions and enhancements that have been implemented across the lineup. New child safety locks for the rear doors and easier-to-use power window switches were introduced during the '07 model year and reflect customers' input.

"Details matter, and our customers told us these details were particularly important, so we updated the H3 lineup to address them," said Walsh.

The H3 Alpha and the entire 2008 H3 lineup are standard head curtain side air bags; they were previously optional. Additional standard safety features now found on all H3 models include:

* StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
* Four-wheel antilock brakes with traction control
* Dual front air bags with Passenger Sensing System
* Tire pressure monitoring system
* Vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility
* LATCH rear child seat anchors

HUMMER's Rear Vision system and a navigation system are available. The Rear Vision system uses a camera mounted near the rear bumper to provide a view of objects directly behind the vehicle.

Powertrain details
The H3 Alpha's 5.3L engine is a powerful and efficient member of GM's legendary small-block V-8 family. It is rated at 295 horsepower (224 kW) and 317 lb.-ft. of torque (438 Nm); and is similar to the small-block V-8 found in the Chevy Silverado, which was named the 2007 Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

Effortless highway driving also is an attribute of the 5.3L V-8, which enables 0-60 mph performance of approximately eight seconds.
An aluminum cylinder block is used with the H3 Alpha's engine. It helps reduce overall mass and maintains a more desirable front-to-rear weight balance. Like all of GM's small-block V-8 engines, highlights include:

* Deep-skirt cylinder block with cross-bolted main caps
* High-flow cylinder heads
* Electronic throttle control
* 58X ignition system
* E67 32-bit controller
* Polymer-coated pistons with full-floating wrist pins
* Returnless fuel system
* Lightweight valvetrain
* Steel camshaft
* Low-restriction air intake system

GM's small-block V-8 engines are engineered to meet today's more stringent emissions standards. In fact, the H3 Alpha's V-8 engine beats the deadline for new, U.S. federal emissions standards by a year. And compared to truck engines of a decade ago, the small-block engine family is approximately 90 percent cleaner. Cast iron exhaust manifolds matched with four close-coupled catalytic converters help reduce cold-start emissions, which is the largest source of vehicle emissions.

A Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is paired with the H3 Alpha's V-8 engine. And, as with all H3 models, flat-towing is enabled.

New V-8 drives vehicle-wide enhancements
HUMMER H3 and GM Performance Division engineers did more than simply shoehorn a V-8 engine into the H3's engine compartment. Accommodating the new power plant necessitated the execution of a seemingly endless number of technical details - many of which have been implemented across the entire H3 lineup.

The H3's frame was modified to accept the V-8 engine, and a special oil pan was designed to ensure constant oil pressure when driving on steep grades - a hallmark of HUMMER's off-road capability. Also, the engine compartment front of dash was modified to accommodate the V-8, and a new steering system is used on all H3 models to deliver better on-center feel and even more improved off-road reliability.

To support the torque output of the powerful V-8, the H3 Alpha's front differential case is made of cast iron; other models feature an aluminum case. New engine mounts, higher torsion bar rates to support the increased mass, and specific shock valving also are unique to the V-8-powered model, ensuring it continues to deliver the unparalleled ride quality - both on- and off-road - that customers expect.

A HUMMER by any measure
All H3 models pack HUMMER's trademark capability into a midsize package. Compared to the H2, the H3 is 16.9 inches (429 mm) shorter in length, six inches (152 mm) shorter in height and 6.5 inches (165 mm) narrower. Roughly the same length as a midsize family sedan, H3 comfortably navigates city traffic and fits nicely in parking garages.

The H3 lineup also delivers exceptional rock crawling and climbing performance; it was engineered for off-road leadership among midsize SUVs. The heart of this capability is its electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system and suspension tuning tailored for off-road performance. In addition, the H3 features standard underbody shielding, brake traction control, and an optional 4.03:1 transfer case with rear locking differential.

Among its off-road credentials, the H3 can ford 24-inch (610 mm) streams at a 5-mph pace, climb 16-inch (407 mm) vertical steps and rocks, make its way through deep sand and race easily over sandy surfaces.

Hummer H2, 2008

Hummer H2, 2008

HUMMER revealed the 2008 H2 at the New York Auto Show. The powertrain, interior and exterior changes also are included on the H2 SUT. The '08 H2 and H2 SUT go on sale later this year.

The new powertrain combination consists of a 6.2L all-aluminum small-block V-8 engine, rated at 393 horsepower (293 kW) - an increase of about 20 percent over the previous engine - and a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission. Performance-optimizing engine technologies, such as variable valve timing, and the six-speed's wide gear ratios, including a "tall" overdrive gear, enable the improved performance and efficiency over previous models.

All-new, luxury-appointed interior
While drivers will feel the '08 H2's improved performance on the road, they'll appreciate it more while experiencing it in the all-new interior. It features a completely redesigned instrument panel, new seats - including a full third-row seat for two passengers- new door trim panels, new controls, new rear-seat heating/air conditioning system, new rear-seat overhead DVD entertainment system and a new family of premium radios.

Seats in the H2 have a new, chiseled appearance and offer improved comfort. In fact, HUMMER engineers focused on every detail to improve interior comfort. For example, the front seat safety belts are now mounted to the vehicle's B-pillars rather than to the seats themselves. This change enabled engineers uncompromised comfort tuning for the seats. Front seat safety belt pretensioners are new, too, and are standard.

Driving experience
The heart of the '08 H2 is a new, 6.2L V-8 engine that uses variable valve timing technology to maximize performance and fuel efficiency. It is rated at 393 horsepower (293 kW) and 415 lb.-ft. of torque (574 Nm). The engine also features lightweight materials, including an aluminum cylinder block, which helps reduce the vehicle's overall mass.

The 6.2L V-8's technologically advanced features also help it meet new federal emissions standards a year before mandatory implementation.

A new six-speed Hydra-Matic 6L80 RWD electronically controlled automatic transmission backs the 6.2L engine. The six-speed automatic has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio - including two overdrive gears - that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. Also, the 6L80 has a "tap up/tap down" capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

The new powertrain combination helps the 2008 H2 and H2 SUT deliver an additional 1,500 pounds (680 kg) in towing capacity - an increase from 6,500 pounds (2,948 kg) to 8,000 pounds (3,629 kg).
A host of additional powertrain revisions also contributes to the H2's improved performance and efficiency, including:

* Larger-capacity cooling system complements larger, more powerful engine
* Electric engine cooling fans reduce "drag" on engine, enabling more horsepower
* Regulated voltage control maximizes fuel economy by charging electrical components only when necessary
* New LAN electrical architecture is more efficient and uses less electrical energy
* Standard 3.73 rear axle ratio

Off-road acumen also was enhanced with the new powertrain system. The 6L80 transmission's tap up/tap down feature provides more control on grades and it offers automatic grade braking. It also improves the off-road crawl ratio to approximately 39:1 - an improvement of about 20 percent.

The transfer case is improved in the '08 H2; it is stronger with improved performance. A new traction control system also is standard, which helps ensure sure-footed traction in most driving conditions.
Driving performance off the road or on is enhanced by a revised steering gear that has a quicker ratio and improved on-center returnability. The driving experience also is quieter and more refined, thanks to new, tuned air intake and exhaust systems.

Safety standard
Complementing the H2 lineup's performance and comfort changes are enhancements to the safety system. Standard features:
* Roof rail head curtain side air bags for first-, second- and third-row passengers with rollover sensing system
* Safety belt pretensioners (first-row seats)
* Electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
* New traction control system
* Tire pressure monitoring system

Exterior enhancements
All 2008 H2 models are distinguished from previous models with functional changes that maintain HUMMER's instantly recognizable design identify. The iconic, seven-slot grille features larger openings and the lower grille also is enlarged, accommodating the cooling needs of the more powerful 6.2L V-8 engines. The lower bumpers on '08 models are painted silver (previous models had black lower bumpers).

The soul of a HUMMER
While the '08 H2 is offered with a new powertrain and interior, its foundation remains the same: a fully welded ladder-type frame that features a modular, three-piece design incorporating a number of hydroformed components. This design delivers outstanding strength, stiffness and dimensional accuracy.

The H2 has short overhangs for radical approach and departure angles, and exceptional ground clearance for minimal impact on trails. Standard 17-inch wheels, heavy-duty independent front suspension and a five-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing capability. The solid rear axle ensures durable sure-footedness, particularly in tight, off-road situations. Also standard is underbody protection and rocker protection. These elements help the H2 deliver on HUMMER's mantra of capability, including traveling through streams 24 inches (508 mm) deep, climbing 16-inch (406-mm) steps and rocks and paddling through deep sand or snow.

A new, four-channel anti-lock braking/traction control system (ABS/TCS) provides optimum control on slippery surfaces. In addition, the ABS can detect and adjust its braking capabilities to rough off-road surfaces like gravel and potholes. The TCS also includes the ability to gain traction through a single wheel, if necessary, and more wheel slip in a second traction control mode for sand and desert racing conditions.

H2 SUT - maximum utility and fun
Like the H2, the H2 SUT carries passengers and cargo, but does so with a twist: an open cargo bed enables convenient storage of larger items. When cargo requires more space, a 4-foot by 6-foot (122-cm by 244-cm) pickup bed can be created by powering the rear window into the Midgate, then folding forward the Midgate and rear seat. With four passengers on board, the bulkhead at the rear of the SUT's passenger compartment remains upright, still providing ample cargo-carrying capacity.

Hummer H2 extreme: The Ultimate SIX

With just 4.85 meters length, about two meters high and an equally impressive width of a Hummer H2 really is not a small SUV. If these dimensions, yet still not to intimidate neighboring rappers in the U.S., then the course may help to 213 Motoring. This, based in Los Angeles subsidiary of the Japanese tuning brand Calwing stretches from the six-liter V8 and 330 hp Hummer driven hammer to a total length of 5.90 meters. To miss the "Ultimate SIX" an even bolder appearance, also built the car body, a third axis, but the huge vehicle is now actually a little like the six-wheeled mobile leaders from the thirties.

Hummer H1 Alpha Concept

Hummer H1 Alpha Concept, 2001

The Hummer H1 is a civilian vehicle based on the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), popularly known as the Humvee, which was created by AM General.

History
Originally released in the civilian market in 1992, the Hummer H1 owes its birth to the popularity of photos from Operation Desert Storm and the enthusiastic campaign from actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who personally owns several variants of Hummer vehicles. GM announced that 2006 would be the last model year for the Hummer H1 with production winding down in June 2006, due to a new emission laws for Diesel engine vehicles which take effect in 2007. No version of the Hummer H1 ever produced would meet these new standards. AM General currently has orders for an excess of 50,000 new HMMWVs to be produced between 2006-2009 for the United States Military. AM General will continue to produce the H1, just not the Alpha. These vehicles will be sold through Fleet sales. The next H1 will most-likely bear a refined version of the prior 6.5L Turbo Diesel engine, but that has not been confirmed. Selling the H1's through fleet sales will allow the AM General to not be subjected to the new emission rules and regulations. AM General has sufficient fleet orders to produce 600-800 units per year right now.

Specifications
The Hummer H1 has three common variants: a convertible-like soft top, a four-door hard top pickup truck and a Wagon body version. Other less known variants include a two-door pickup truck and a four-door slantback. The convertible/soft top and the station wagon versions are the only ones available in the mass market. The 2 door and 4 door pickup versions are only available in fleet livery.

5 engine types and three automatic transmission types can be found in Hummer H1s. The common engine/transmission combinations are:
  • 6.2 L Detroit Diesel V8/GM TH400/3L80 3-speed
  • 6.5 L Detroit Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 5.7 L Vortec 5700 gasoline V8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 6.5 L turbo Detroit Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 6.6 L Duramax LLY turbo Diesel/Allison 1000 5-speed (model year 2006)
The Hummer H1 shares some common driveline parts with its HMMWV brethren. Items like brakes, differentials, frame and major body panels (hood, tailgate and quarter panels) are identical between the HMMWV and the Hummer H1. All Hummer H1s and HMMWVs come off the same first stage assembly line, and then are separated midway to either become a military HMMWV or a civilian H1.

Hummer H1s are unique in the way they handle off road. They are inherently very stable, thanks to their wide stance. They also can ford 30 inches (76 cm) of water, climb a 22-inch (56 cm) step, have a stock ground clearance of 16 inches (41 cm) (thanks to its design of tucking driveline components inside a channel, which subsequently intrudes into the cabin space of the vehicle), have approach/departure angles of 72/37.5 degrees and most H1s are equipped with Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire air pressure at will.

Hummer H1s have many unusual features. They use inboard brakes. They have geared hubs, allowing the drivetrain's half shafts to be up high for greater clearance. The radiator is up high, sloping back over the engine. Rather than using simple runflat tires, aluminum or rubber inserts are an optional feature for runflat ability. A central tire inflation system is available as an option. Chemical warfare resistant paint is available only on the military version.

Price
Price is projected to be around US$129,399 for the open-top, and US$140,796 for the wagon.

The Impact of the Utility Truck on Commercial Vehicles

Hummer H2

Does your current job require that you travel from one location or jobsite to another with all kinds of equipment to perform your services? If so, having an organized system by which you can securely store your tools in your vehicle without constantly digging around for them or fearing that something gets lost is of the utmost importance. Thankfully, there is a specific type of vehicle that was designed specifically to solve these problems, the utility truck.

The origins of the utility truck come from the Australian State of Victoria in the 1930’s. Allegedly, a farmer’s wife wrote to the Ford manufacturing plant and inquired as to why the company had not invented a vehicle that could simultaneously be used to haul the family to church on Sunday, while transporting the pigs to market on Monday. Part of her inspiration had to do with the fact that at that time, the Australian banks would provide loans for farming vehicles, but not passenger vehicles. Thankfully the good people at Ford liked the idea, and the first Utility Truck was born.

HONDA

Today you can find utility trucks for sale at new and used automobile dealerships throughout the United States and the entire world. Who uses these trucks today? All kinds of people use them. For example, if you worked as a cable installer burying fiber optic cables into the ground, you might need a truck with extra towing capacity to lug around your heavy machinery, as well as storage space for all of your cable. Voila – the utility truck solves both of these needs.

Alternatively, a plumber typically has to carry all kinds of equipment, whether it is wrenches, elbow joints, piping, a plumbing ‘snake’, and other tools. Specially designed utility trucks come with lockable storage containers mounted onto the sides of the vehicle that are perfect for storing all of this various equipment. Today the utility truck has expanded from the original Aussie ‘Ute’ to take on many forms. It is the prototype for the modern parcel van, single or dual rear wheel utility truck, contractor flatbed, service truck, and a whole host of other vehicles that are used for commercial use today.

The end of Hummer

BCP6BN34436B

As reported in The Times, the attempt by General Motors to flog its ailing Hummer brand to the Chinese has failed.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, with no experience of vehicle manufacture, had agreed to buy Hummer for $150 million. However, the deal needed approval from the Chinese government. They, in the end, weren’t too keen because it didn’t fit in with their nascent green policies.

The chance of finding another buyer appears slim. Of course this is awful news for those working for Hummer and its dealers, but the unfortunate reality is that it’s the free market at work.

Economic meltdown and rising fuel costs have severely affected many people’s wish to buy an SUV. The current need for SUV drivers to withstand the withering looks and snide comments, freely offered by those of an environmentalist bent, hasn’t helped either.

Hummer was hit especially badly, and sales in 2009 fell a massive 67% to around 9,000 units. Its products had become largely irrelevant. Hardly anyone needed the range’s off road ability, and one of the few unconvincing concessions to improved fuel consumption was the availability of a 3.7 litre five cylinder engine for the H3 (instead of the usual 5.3 litre V8). Petrol-powered, of course - no diesels here.

The vehicle that started it all, the military-spec Humvee, is unaffected by the demise of Hummer and will continue to be built by AM General.

Supercharged Hummer H3 V8 by Geiger

Someone should tell the good folks over at Geiger that gluttonous, V8 powered SUVs are no longer cool. You know, given the worldwide economic crisis and global warming, excess is out and restraint is in.

But why not fly in the face of all that and have some fun with a Hummer? It's only a baby Hummer, after all.

So let's have a look-see at what German tuner Geiger has cooking for the Hummer H3.

Well, they've taken the stock 5.3 liter V8 and slapped a supercharger on it to squeeze some more life out of the thing - a lot more. What you get is the H3 V8 Kompressor, with Geiger taking the 5.3 liter V8's standard 300 hp and 320 lb-ft (434 Nm) of torque and cranking it up to a galloping 423 hp and 502 lb-ft (680 Nm) of pure power.

What that does is make this high center of gravity vehicle take a scary 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) run in 7 seconds with a top speed that has to be illegal somewhere for an SUV this size of 238 km/h (148mph).

On the optics side, the full body kit with carbon fiber trim on the inside are best described by the photos that follow.

And if the Hummer brand doesn't survive GM's current troubles, this H3 will look really retro out there on the road. Screaming 90s Detroit automotive narcissism. Ah, those were the days.

Hummer H2 Silver Ice Limited Edition

This year's round of updates to the Hummer H2 included an upgraded, redesigned interior, a more powerful 6.2 liter V8 and a new six-speed automatic transmission that, whether you approve of the H2 or not, did a decent job of updating the aging beast. All of that work under the skin was a bit subtle when viewed from the curb however, so Hummer is introducing another limited model to keep things interesting. The Hummer H2 "Silver Ice" limited edition will debut later this year.

Available on the H2 and H2 SUT models, the Silver Ice edition is distinguished by monochromatic metallic silver paint, Hummer's chrome kit and special 20-inch chrome wheels. Standard amenities include a reverse-assist camera, leather, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a sunroof and an upgraded BOSE 5.1 surround-sound audio.

The Silver Ice limited edition follows the 2007 Victory Red and 2006 Pacific Blue special-edition Hummers and suggests strongly that the tradition of yearly unique-color limited editions will continue.

2009 Hummer H3T

It is time to reveal the new pick truck, which will be presented to the public in the next Chicago Auto Show. It would take a little longer for us to have the official images, but the magazine Truck Trend broke the embargo date (February 1, 2008) in its last issue.

The Hummer H3T is build on the Chevrolet Colorado /H3 architecture. Although based on the SUV, the H3T’s wheelbase is 8,6 cm larger, reaching 3,41 m and allowing the presence of a pretty reasonable separate bed, with 1,5 m. The crew cab ca carry up to five passengers.

Engine options range from a Vortec 3.7L I-5 with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing that generates 245 bhp at 5,600 rpm and 328 Nm at 4,600 rpm, mated to a five-speed manual transmition or an optional four-speed automatic gearbox, to the Hummer H3 Alpha’s engine, a 5.3-liter small block V8 that delivers 304 bhp and 433 Nm. For this option, the four-speed automatic transmition is standard, as well as the towing capacity of 2,676 kg.

If the H3T owner wants to use it in difficult terrains, the off-road capabilities of the new Hummer pickup truck can be maximized with the Off-Road Adventure suspension package. Besides front and rear locking differentials, unique in the midsize pickup trucks segment, it also offers 33-inch tires, 4.03:1 low-range gearing in the transfer case and crawl ratios of 68.9 with the manual transmission or 56.2 with the automatic. The standard suspension package, the Z85 Heavy-Duty Handling and Trailering, uses 32-inch tires.
